A small protein in blood that acts like a "sponge" to keep fluid within

balance in the body.

Alimentary
Another term for the gut or intestinal tract. The alimentary tract runs from

large intestine, rectum, and anus.

A management system where the entire population is removed from a single area,
the area is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and then the animals are moved back in.

Anamnestic response
The memory of immune cells that allows for more rapid and intense production

A hormone produced in the brain that acts on the kidney causing it to save water

A substance released from some types of bacteria in the intestine that when

Energy
A nutrient essential for maintenance, growth, production and reproduction. Energy

the limiting factor in livestock production.

Gross Energy (GE) The total combustible energy in a feed, determined by measuring
the amount of heat produced when a feed sample is completely burnt in a bomb
calorimeter.

Enteral
Delivery of drugs or nutrients to the intestinal tract by deposition in the

A pathogen that is related to E. coli.

Enteropatogenic E. coli
Specific strains of E. coli that attach very tightly to gut wall and secrete

Enterotoxemia
Clostridial disease where organisms produce a toxin that causes a gangrene or
necrotizing affect to the small intestinal tract of the animal.
A highly fatal disease related to the proliferation of gram negative organisms in the intestine of susceptible animals.
A disease of some animals most often young goats, calves and lambs, caused
by an organism; characterized by diarrhea, circling, convulsions, in coordination
and weakness; prevented by vaccination and exercise; treatment is inadequate;
also called overeating disease.

A specific strain K99 that attaches to intestinal cells and causes a hyper secretory
diarrhea.

Enzyme
A complex protein compound produced in living cells, which speeds up chemical

of feeds.

break down food to hasten the process of digestion.

diarrhea, Polyuria, expand blood volume shock, correct electrolyte imbalance,

Gouger
A simple instrument with two rounded wooden handles with a sharp blade, which

Hypercalcemia
Elevated blood calcium. The most common cause is the production of a biochemical
substance by tumors, resulting in the retention of calcium. This is called pseudohyperparathyroidism,
most commonly occurring in patients with lymphoma or tumors of the apocrine
anal sac. Pseudohyperparathyroidism has been reported associated with other
tumor types. Primary hyperparathyroidism occurs uncommonly.
